Our vineyard. Hoopes Vineyard is located in the southernmost part of Oakville, where Yount Mill Road divides the Oakville and Yountville sub-appellations of Napa Valley. The vineyard grows vigorously. Nestled against a hill, and sitting firmly in the flood zone of the Napa River, Hoopes Vineyard has uniquely diverse and fertile alluvial soils despite the small ten-acre size. Farmed and picked by hand, the unique Hoopes fruit receives the highest attention throughout the entire grape growing process. The microclimate is very cool in the evening and mostly moderate heat throughout the day. The vineyard produces some of the best Cabernet in the valley due to the unique site, clone, and soil combination.
Our story: Spencer Hoopes loves wine and he also loves farming. What began as a passion for collecting wine and the land soon grew. In 1983, Spencer planted his ten-acre vineyard in the Oakville AVA of Napa Valley. With the remarkable terroir, a little bit of luck, and a lot of love, he quickly found a home for the grapes in some of the better wineries in Napa Valley.
Fifteen years later, Spencer decided to take some of those grapes off the market and put them into bottles with his name on the label. Spencer Hoopes had always loved aromatic wines with balance and structure, and he wanted to make that kind of wine with the grapes from his own vineyard. So, he launched Hoopes Cabernet. Hoopes wines are classic cabs that capture the pure relationship between grape-grown and winemaker, with an old-world-meets-new-world style profile. The philosophy is simple: minimize after-harvest manipulation of the grape so that you can enjoy the most important ingredient in its true form. This is true grower-made wine.
Today, Lindsay Hoopes follows in her father’s footsteps as they work together, sharing his vision of great cabernet sauvignon from the Napa Valley.
Our winemaker: Anne Vawter loves horses and wine. Growing up on a farm in Walla Walla, Washington, Anne developed a deep appreciation for agriculture from her father and inherited his love of wine. After graduating from the University of California, Davis, with a BS Degree in viticulture and enology in 2002, she worked in wineries in Washington, California and Chile. Anne credits much of her own wine making style to her work as Heidi Barrett’s assistant at Paradigm Winery in Oakville.
Anne joined Hoopes Vineyard as wine maker with the 2012 vintage. She shares the vision of vineyard-focused wine making with the Hoopes.
